Itinerary: 5 Days from Fes to Marrakech

Day 1: The Great Divide from City to Sand

We leave the ancient Medina of Fes behind, the noise fading as we climb into the Middle Atlas Mountains. The air turns crisp as we pass Ifrane; a town that looks plucked from the Swiss Alps. And wander into the cedar forests of Azrou, where Barbary macaques watch from the branches. We wind down through the Ziz Valley, a stunning corridor of a million palm trees that signals our entry into the south. By afternoon, the Erg Chebbi dunes rise on the horizon like a wall of gold. Here, we trade the van for camels. You’ll trek out into the deep desert, watching the sun set and the moon rise, until we reach our luxury camp. It’s a night of drumming, fire, and a sky so thick with stars it feels heavy.

Day 2: Canyons, Kasbahs, and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs

After waking up to a sunrise that paints the dunes in impossible pastels, we enjoy breakfast and head towards the dramatic Dades Valley. The road takes us through Rissani, the birthplace of the current Moroccan dynasty, and past the Todra Gorge. Here, the cliff walls shoot up 300 meters on either side, casting the river below into cool shadow—it’s a perfect place for a short walk and a splash of cold water. We then drive the famous “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” where ancient mud-brick fortresses crumble beautifully into the earth. We pass through the Valley of Roses, famous for its perfumes, before settling for the night in the Dades Valley, surrounded by rock formations known as “Monkey Fingers.”

Day 3: Crossing the Atlas to the Red City

Today we cross the backbone of Morocco. We drive south through the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs,” visiting the stunning Kasbah of Amridil near Skoura to see how people lived in these earthen castles. Then, we hit Ouarzazate and the UNESCO site of Ait Ben Haddou; a ksar that looks like it’s been frozen in time, serving as the backdrop for films like Gladiator. From there, the road climbs. We tackle the Tizi n’Tichka pass, winding through hairpin turns at 2,260 meters, with Berber villages clinging to the cliffs. The views are dizzying. As we descend, the heat rises, and the flat, red plain of Marrakech opens up. We arrive in the late afternoon, checking into our Riad to rest.

Day 4: The Atlantic Breeze – Essaouira Excursion

We escape the inland heat for a day trip to the coast. The drive takes us through Argan tree country, where you’ll likely see goats climbing the branches, a sight unique to this region. We arrive in Essaouira, a relaxed, blue-and-white fortified town that feels worlds away from the mainland. The Portuguese ramparts still guard the city against the crashing Atlantic waves. You can spend the day wandering the spice-scented souks, watching the fishing boats haul in their catch, or just sitting at a café on the port eating fresh grilled seafood while the seagulls cry overhead. It’s a day to slow down, breathe the salt air, and recharge before we drive back to Marrakech in the evening.

Day 5: The Heart of the Medina

Our final day is dedicated to understanding the chaotic magic of Marrakech. We dive into the historic Medina, navigating the labyrinthine alleys to find the hidden Bahia Palace with its painted ceilings and lush gardens. We’ll visit the Saadian Tombs, resting undisturbed for centuries, and lose ourselves in the vibrant colors of the souks, where stalls overflow with leather, lamps, and spices. The tour culminates at the Jemaa el-Fnaa square. As the sun sets, the square transforms into a massive open-air theater filled with storytellers, musicians, and food stalls. We leave you there, in the heart of the action, to finish your journey with a glass of mint tea and the sounds of the city.
